World Cup Kabaddi: India, Kenya win in opening day matches
PATIALA: The opening matches of 4th World Cup Kabaddi on Sunday began here amid full enthusiasm at Yadwindra Public School stadium, where India drubbed United States while Spain defeated Kenya in men's category. In the women's games, India defeated New Zealand.
India defeated US with a margin of 28 points, scoring 59 points over 31 by US, while Spaniards defeated Kenya with a margin of 12 points (40-32). Kenyans gave a tough fight to the Spanish team.
With deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal skipping the function due to his political assignments, chief guest on the first day was cabinet minister Surjit Singh Rakhra, who was accompanied by Punjab Kabaddi Association president Sikander Singh Maluka.
The highlight of the event was the composition of men's team of Kenya and women's team of New Zealand, which had only native players. Kenyans, who gave a tough fight to the Spanish team, artfully manifested the tricks and techniques of circle style format, reminding the crowd of the entry of African countries in the game, otherwise known as the game of north Indians and Pakistani Punjabis.
The fourth match, scheduled to be held between Argentina and Kenya, was rescheduled due to delayed arrival of Argentinean squad.
Two players - one Kenyan and other from US -- were injured during the first day of the tournament and were rushed to local Govt Rajindra Hospital, where their condition was stated to be out of danger.
